Lake Oswego police cracking down on crosswalk scofflaws
The Oregonian | June 11, 2014 | By Rick Bella
Lake Oswego police will launch a pedestrian-safety blitz June 30, cracking down on motorists who fail to honor crosswalks.
The operation will run from 8 a.m. to noon at the intersection of B Avenue and Second Street, said Officer Denton Veach of the Lake Oswego Police Department.
During the crackdown, traffic officers will be posted to ensure that drivers stop -- and remain stopped -- for "decoy" pedestrians in the crosswalks. This intersection has a marked crosswalk, and it is located in a mixed business-and-residential area.
According to Oregon law, drivers are required to stop for a pedestrian trying to cross in a crosswalk until the pedestrian reaches the sidewalk, or is at least one lane past the lane where the driver has stopped. Failing to stop or remain stopped for a pedestrian in a crosswalk is a Class B traffic violation punishable by a fine of $260.
Passing a vehicle stopped at a pedestrian crosswalk also is a Class B traffic violation.
Funding for the pedestrian-safety operation is made possible through a grant from Oregon Impact. This is the sixth year that Lake Oswego police have conducted pedestrian-safety operations to raise awareness among motorists.
